Day 1 Meet the industry Expert Resource Person- Dr LipinDev, Director and Co-Founder, VTEcogreen Technologies Pvt Ltd. The resource person was introduced by Dr. Sreedevi R, Asst. Professor, Department of Microbiology. The resource person enriched the session with his talk on his path as a bio entrepreneur. The seminar was focused on introducing various schemes and funding options to be availed by researchers and students in the field of life sciences. Dr Lipin, a pioneer in the field of life science was an experienced entrepreneur at national and international levels. He had availed various research grants and is successfully running his own firm based at Coimbatore. During the session, he introduced various opportunities which could be availed by academicians, industry experts, students and researchers in the field of life science. He discussed well how to draft a proposal, to do presentations and to find out a suitable funding agency for the proposed work. He also discussed various national and international funding agencies, government and private funding agencies approachable to the community. Overall the session was fruitful with lots of naïve information for the people in the life sciences field and it rendered a ray of hope for a successful career in the field of life science. His talk inspired the participants and they interacted with great enthusiasm. Day 2 National Webinar-Applications of Endophytic fungi in Cancer Research Resource Person- Dr.Divya Lakshmanan M, Asst.Professor, Yenepoya Research Centre, Yenepoya Deemed University,Mangalore The Resource person was introduced by Ms.Vijisha M.C,Asst. Professor, Department of Microbiology. The endophytic fungi that live inside plant tissues produce novel bioactive metabolites exhibiting a variety of biological activities, especially against cancer. Natural products obtained from endophytic fungi have been identified as continuing and prolific sources of anti-cancer agents that could have a profound impact on modern medicine. Dr.Divya Lakshmanan delivered a talk on her research works on various endophytic fungi isolated from different plant species and various secondary metabolites obtained from them. She dealt with the cytotoxic studies of these metabolites using antiproliferative assays in cancer cell lines and high throughput screening that allows the evaluation of the anticancer activity of these metabolites. The participants really enjoyed and were enriched with her talk. The participants actively involved in the interactive session. The session came to an end by 4.30 and Ms SmithaChacko delivered the vote of thanks.

Category : Motivation Date : 27/08/2020 Resource Person : Ms. Smitha M – Director, Greens Ecoproducts, Parathur, Palakkad District, Kerala No of participants: 70 Report: “Meet the Industry Expert Programme During Covid-19 Crisis” was an interactive session conducted on 27/08/2020 from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm on Google meet platform and it was organized for the Students (both UG and PG), Department of Microbiology. It was organized with the aim of motivating students who are worried about their future, job, and higher studies during this Kovid-19 Pandemic; we hope that this program will help students to gain the courage or enthusiasm they need to overcome this situation. The program started with the welcome address by Ms.Smitha Chacko, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology. She welcomed all and introduced the Resource Person Ms. Smitha M – Director, Greens Eco-products, Parathur, Palakkad District, Kerala. The event was facilitated by Mr. Abdul Bari KK, HOD, Department of Microbiology. Covid nineteen has affected humans in many ways. It has left us all with a heap of uncertainty. It has created a new world view where our hours, days, and weeks look very little like they used to.. It's difficult to plan anything when we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. But man is always eager to face the crises of life. We need to develop the ability to make the right decisions when needed. As such, it is understandable that this program has benefited everyone. Because as an entrepreneur, our resource person explained how to start a business in the circumstances in which we live. Ms. Smitha shared her experiences as an entrepreneur. She compares this reality we’re now living to resembles that of an entrepreneur. Still, she is confident to face it. She explained the guidelines to start an enterprise. She also highlighted the support provided by the Government in this regard. The Meet the Industry Expert Programme was interesting and informative. This session was very insightful as it was an interactive session, where the students gained information about starting an enterprise. She clarified the various doubts raised by the students and faculty members. A total of 70 participants participated in the programme. The National Science Day was celebrated in the Department with the focal theme ‘ women in science as a one-day program with a number of activities. The day is celebrated in India in memory of Sir CV Raman to recognize his contributions to the entire science and especially to Indian scientific growth. The program is funded by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), and supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India. A frontier lecture session by Dr. Merlyn Lopus, Post Doctoral Fellow, MSSRF, Wayanad was the highlight of the day. She officially inaugurated the celebration in a function in which Principal Dr. Anilkumar K. presided over and Mr. Abdul bari, HOD, Microbiology did the welcome speech. The talk by Dr. Merlyn was inspiring for the students in general and for girls in particular. She could share her experience as a women scientist and her journey from a household family woman to the research horizon through the back-to-lab program of KSCSTE. She also challenged the girls to be in front of their dreams and decide when the choice is given in such a way that family and research will go together. The gathering was felicitated by Fr. Varghese Kollammavudy, CEO, Prof. Thara Philip, Self-finance course Coordinator, Dr. Dileep M. R., IQAC Coordinator, and Dr. Jomet Sebastian, HOD Biochemistry. Ms. Nesreena, a Microbiology student delivered the vote of thanks. The technical session started after the tea break and Dr. Merlyn delivered an informative session on the applications of Bioinformatics in biological science. Various tools and software widely employed in research and analysis were demonstrated well. In addition to the frontier lecture session, a science quiz competition was also arranged. Students from all the departments participated to make the event a big success. The winners of the competition were recognized in the general program and awarded cash prizes. At the end of the day, Mr. Abdul Bari expressed sincere gratitude to all the organizing committee members and participants.

Dr. Rajan Iyyappan, Post Doc Fellow, The Czech Academy of Sciences. An eminent scholar in the field of Molecular biology and Biochemistry. He has given a speech on higher education and research possibilities in Biological sciences in India and Abroad.

The department of microbiology had conducted an association inauguration and one-day seminar in connection with the birthday of the father of microbiology Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. The student’s association MICRO FOCUS was inaugurated by chief guest Dr. Denoj Sebastian assistant professor microbiology department of life sciences Calicut university. Welcome speech was delivered by Abdul Bari K.K., HOD, Dept of Microbiology felicitated by Fr. George Allummutil (bursar), prof. Thara Philip (director of self-financing programs) and the presidential address was delivered by Dr. Deelip (IQAC coordinator). In the inaugural session, the HOD of the department had presented a brief commemoration of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. After tea break, the Technical session started at 12.15 pm Dr. Denoj Sebastian took a seminar on the subject of Amazing Microbes around us. Ms. Jayasudha, Faculty in charge of the Students association delivered the vote of thanks.

The department of microbiology conducted QAMAR 2K19 in order to celebrate the launch of chandrayan 2. On that proud full day, students of the Microbiology department made models of satellites and decorated the college with other craftworks. Different programmes were also organized on behalf of QAMAR 2K19. QUIZ COMPETITION was conducted completely based on astronomy. A total of 12 teams participated. In this inter-department quiz competition, Ebina Varghese of 2nd-year Microbiology anchored the competition with a total of 3 rounds. Manitha Girish and Vimal Tom of the Economics department won the first prize and Rashid and Athira of the BVoc Department won the second place. COLLAGE MAKING COMPETITION was held on the topic "moon day" 7 teams of 2 students participated. Participants were allotted 2 hours for completing their works Athira and Anjana of the biochemistry department won first and Ann Manoj and Akshaya Suresh of the Mass communication department won second. Both competitions were held at 10: 00 am and mementos for winners distributed by principal Dr. Anil Kumar, Dr. Jomet Sebastian, Head of Biochemistry department facilitated the programme during this session In the afternoon session, at 2 pm DEBATE competition was held different and innovative discussions were held on the topic of whether India wants to spend money on space experiments or on helping for which is a needy thing. 7 teams containing 5 students participated in the competition Departments of Biochemistry was first and Department of mass communication got 2nd.

The 3rd year microbiology students conducted skill fest “MUSICANA 2K19” in accordance with WORLD YOUTH SKILL DAY on 15/7/2019. A music competition and drawing competition were organized for 1styear and 2ndyear students of the Department. Abdul Bari K. K.(Head of the Microbiology department), Vijisha M. C. (Class in charge of 3rd-year Microbiology), Jomet Sebastian (Head of the department Biochemistry), and Geethu Daniel (Faculty of Department of Biochemistry) were part of the program. The program started at 2:30 pm. The program coordinator was Fathima Nesreena A. The anchors were Thulasi P T and Jasheena P. Program treasurers were Nirmal Saji and Sivaja S D. For the music competition, a group of 10 students from each 2nd and 1st year Microbiology have participated. Both the group played well and finally, the 2nd year students won the competition. In the drawing competition, Abhinav-Gokul and Ajil-Vijin participated from 1st year and 2nd year respectively and the theme gave was “rain”. The winners of drawing competition was Ajil and Vijin. The prizes were distributed by Abdul Bari K.K., Jomet Sebastian, Vijisha M.C., and Geethu Daniel. At last, the program concluded with a vote of thanks by Sneha K S at 3:45 pm.

A one-day seminar on "New approaches and analytical techniques in biological sciences" was organized by the post-graduate department of microbiology and biochemistry of Pazhassiraja College on the 1st of February 2019. The event was inaugurated by Dr. A O Roy, Principal, Pazhassiraja College, and was presided over by Prof. Thara Philip, Director of self-financing courses; Fr George Alumoottil and Prof. Saleel., Staff secretary. The chief guests of the day were Dr. Ragavendra, Asst Professor Dept of Microbiology, women’s College, Mysuru, who handled the first technical session on “Recent developments in Microbiology”, and Dr. Suresh N Nair, Asst Professor Dept of Pharmacology and Toxicology, KVASU, Mannuthy, who handled the second technical session on “Molecular techniques in Microbiology”. The technical sessions which lasted for an hour were followed by an interactive session where the audience clarified their doubts on various topics relevant to the topic of discussion. As a token of gratitude, the dignitaries were awarded mementos by the HOD of Microbiology and Biochemistry. The event also witnessed the honoring of two eminent professors of the college- Dr. A O Roy, Principal, Pazhassiraja College, and Prof. Saleel, Dept of English who were about to retire this year. The motive of this programme was to provide an opportunity to budding scientists from different parts of Kerala to interact with the resource persons and develop a fraternal community of researchers. In the latter sessions that followed, students from within the college and outside came up with their presentations. The best among them were selected by a panel of judges which involved the faculties of the Dept of Microbiology and Biochemistry and were awarded. The program was well organized and executed by the teachers and students of the dept of microbiology and biochemistry. However, the teacher co-ordinator – Mr. Abdul Bari (HOD), and student co-ordinator- Ajmal deserves a special mention for their sincere efforts for making it a grand success.

The Department of microbiology organized the World environment day celebrations of this year on 25th June with the focal theme “plastic pollution”. All the students and staff members from the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry participated with great enthusiasm and attended all the sessions. There was an invited lecture on “Plastic degradation: A microbial approach” handled by Prof Nithya Jayan from S N College, Alathur. The lecture session was chaired by Dr. Mashhoor K. from EMEA College, Kondotty. The other associated competitions like handicraft making from used plastic materials and mobile film making were also conducted. The programmes was officially inaugurated in the morning by Mr. Rajesh A. K., Assistant Coordinator, District Suchithwa Mission, Wayanad. Principal Dr. A. O. Roy presided over the function and HOD, Mr. Abdul Bari did the welcome speech. College Bursar Fr. George Alummuttil, Self-financing courses coordinator Prof. Thara Philip, Staff secretary Prof. Saleel M. M., and HOD Biochemistry Dr. Jomet Sebastian addressed the gathering. Mrs. Smitha Chacko, Asst. professor of Microbiology did the welcome speech by 11 am. Prof. Nithya Jayan explained the role of different microorganisms in the bioconversion of plastic origin materials into useful products like fuel. She is a good researcher in the field and was able to encourage the students in the way of research and invoked them against the pollutions created by plastic uses. Prof Nithya said that even though the use is harmful we do not have an effective alternative and the young generation must work in that direction. Dr. Mashhoor inspired the minds to deeply understanding the technology and learn to use it for the welfare of life and more significantly for a safe environment. He is a genuine researcher in the field of Biotechnology and well exposed to applying technology in biological sciences. The handicraft-making competition, the crafted waste, conducted in the afternoon session with the active participation of many schools and college students. The crafts were evaluated by the panel of judges and winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates. The participants used the waste plastic materials for the craftwork hence molding the waste into beautiful things. The mobile film-making competition was organized in order to make awareness among the youth against the use and overuse of plastic materials. Around a dozen of teams participated from nearby schools and colleges. The evaluation was done by the mass communication faculty and the winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates. In brief, a total of 200 students and 25 faculty members participated in the one-day programme in connection with the Word environment day celebrations 2018 organized by the Department of Microbiology with financial assistance from KSCSTE.

Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) with a focal theme “Science and Technology for sustainable future with the support of the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. On 27th February, we had a frontier lecture session by Dr. E Sreekumaran, Associate professor of Physiology and Head of the Lifesciences Dept., University of Calicut. He officially inaugurated the celebration in function in which Principal Dr. A. O. Roy presided over and Mr. Abdul bari, HOD, Microbiology did the welcome speech. “Scientific knowledge and scientific temper are different,” Dr. Sreekumaran said in his speech and added that it is not necessary to be a science student to have a scientific temper. The gathering was felicitated by Fr. Tony Jacob Kozhimannil, CEO, Prof. Thara Philip, Self-finance course Coordinator, Prof. Saleel M. M., Staff Secretary, Dr. Dileep M. R., IQAC Coordinator, and Dr. Jomet Sebastian, HOD Biochemistry. Mr. Rinooj A. B., a Microbiology student delivered the vote of thanks. The programme in the department was subtitled “ The synergy of science and technology: 1029-2020” and there was a powerpoint presentation prepared by the students detailing the major scientific developments during the century. The technical session started after the tea break and Dr. Sreekumaran elaborated the significance of consciousness in polluting the environment during his presentation entitled “ Science, technology; pollution and solutions. He listed number of events in daily life where we are part of polluting the system and reminded us of serious responses from the environment. Dr. Sreedevi R. expressed gratitude and Dr. A. O. Roy presented a Memento as a token of affection to him. The function was also remarkable with the recognition of Dr. Sreedevi’s Ph.D. achievement. A memento was given on behalf of the Dept. of Lifesciences by the chief guest. In addition to the frontier lecture session, three competition events were also arranged on the 28th, Essay writing, Powerpoint making, and Quiz competition. The quiz was remarkable with the good number of participation and enthusiasm from the students. At the end of the day Mr. Abdul Bari expressed sincere gratitude to all the organizing committee members and participants.
